What is an Air Handling Unit (AHU)?

An Air Handling Unit (AHU) is a central component in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, used to regulate and circulate air as part of a building’s climate control strategy. An AHU typically contains components such as fans, heating/cooling coils, filters, humidifiers and dampers to condition and distribute air efficiently.

Located either inside or outside a building, AHUs draw in outside air, condition it and supply it throughout the space via ductwork. They also extract stale indoor air, which can be filtered or expelled.

AHUs are used in a wide range of environments, from commercial buildings to industrial facilities and cleanrooms. Their modularity and customisation options make them suitable for diverse applications requiring precise environmental control.

Applications of Air Handling Units

Air Handling Units are used across a wide range of sectors where temperature, humidity and air quality control are critical. In industrial settings, AHUs help maintain stable environments that protect equipment and ensure process consistency. In commercial spaces, they contribute to comfort and wellbeing by regulating indoor climate.

Applications include data centres, food and beverage production, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, offices and retail environments. AHUs are also essential in cleanrooms, laboratories and healthcare facilities, where air filtration and particle control are vital.

Summit’s AHUs are built to support both temporary installations—ideal for emergency cooling or planned works—and long-term solutions where permanent infrastructure is needed. Their adaptability makes them a core part of any climate control system.
