Renowned as the original manufacturer of call point covers, STI has led the way in product innovation and reliability for over 40 years. Since its founding in 1980 by Jack Taylor, the company has stayed true to its roots—continually refining its product range while pushing the boundaries of design and functionality to meet evolving global safety needs.

Guided by its core values of Innovation, Integrity, One Team, Quality, and Accountability, STI aspires to be the leader in life safety and security solutions worldwide. With a strong European presence and a growing customer base, STI is firmly focused on delivering high-performance products that make a positive impact on people and the environments they live and work in.

The Challenge
For many years, STI outsourced their plastic injection moulding to their parent company in the United States and selected manufacturing partners internationally. However, as demand from their European customers increased, so too did the need for shorter lead times, more flexible production schedules, and greater control over quality and logistics.

After conducting a detailed review of costs, logistics, and customer service needs, STI concluded that setting up a dedicated in-house moulding facility in the UK would offer the greatest long-term value. To spearhead this transformation, they hired Huw Real, a manufacturing operations expert. Initially hired to deliver this complex project, Huw’s strategic input and successful execution led to his appointment as full-time (Head of Manufacturing and R&D).

Partnering with Summit Systems
To ensure the new moulding facility was equipped for success from the outset, STI engaged with Summit Systems, a leading UK supplier of plastics ancillary equipment. Working closely with Technical Sales Engineer Jason Culleton, STI were guided through every step of the equipment specification and selection process.

Jason's deep technical knowledge and understanding of STI’s objectives were instrumental in recommending the most efficient and futureproof solution. He advised on an integrated approach that would optimise material handling, drying, cooling, and recycling.

Turnkey System Delivered by Summit Systems
Summit Systems supplied and installed a full suite of ancillary equipment designed to complement the Engel injection moulding machines STI had also purchased. The turnkey solution included:

  • Maguire ULTRA Low Energy Dryer
This state-of-the-art dryer is one of the most energy-efficient on the market, offering up to 80% energy savings compared to traditional desiccant dryers. With its ULTRA technology, it provides rapid material drying with no desiccant, minimal maintenance, and reduced carbon footprint.
  • Summit Water Cooling System
Essential for moulding operations, this closed-loop cooling system ensures stable mould temperature control and efficient cooling cycles, which directly impact part quality and cycle times. The system is tailored to STI’s operational needs, offering reliability and scalability.
  • Zerma GSL Beside-the-Press Granulator
This compact, low-speed granulator enables immediate recycling of sprues and rejected parts right at the press, reducing waste and improving sustainability. With low noise and high precision, it fits neatly beside each moulding machine.
  • Summit Material Day Bins
The stainless-steel bins provide efficient, contamination-free storage of material for daily use. It helps streamline the feeding process, improves traceability, and keeps material conditions consistent throughout production.
  • Full Stainless-Steel Pipework and Installation
Summit’s engineers installed all material and air handling pipework to the highest standards, ensuring a clean, safe, and efficient layout that supports future scalability.

Why STI Chose Summit Systems
According to Huw Real, "We chose Summit Systems because they offered a truly turnkey solution. Working with Jason Culleton gave us real confidence—we weren’t just buying equipment; we were investing in a fully integrated system with expert support behind it. Summit took the time to understand our requirements and delivered a setup that’s efficient, reliable, and ready to grow with us."

Looking Ahead: Future Expansion Plans
With their new in-house moulding facility fully operational, STI is already seeing the benefits of increased control, improved efficiency, and enhanced responsiveness to customer needs across Europe. The success of this project has laid a strong foundation for continued investment and development.

Plans are now underway to further expand the facility’s capabilities. STI is exploring the integration of dosing units to enable more flexible use of materials and colour changes, streamlining production and enhancing customisation options. Additionally, with output steadily increasing, the company is considering the acquisition of more Maguire ULTRA Dryers to support future growth and maintain the highest standards of material handling.

This transition marks more than just a shift in operations—it reflects STI’s long-term commitment to innovation, quality, and customer service. By taking moulding in-house and partnering with trusted experts like Summit Systems, STI has positioned itself for sustainable success, ready to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving market with confidence and agility.
